The Genesis has been around for a long time now and the coating finish on all the ropes is thefirst change we have seen in a while. You used to be able to get the Genesis in Duraflex (untreated) and Superdry but now, probably due to the popularity and use of the model it comes in a Coating Finish only. With Mammut’s Coating finish process, the individual rope strands are Teflon coated in order to minimize chafing and improve friction coefficiency. Loading, e.g. through a fall, is uniformly distributed through each individual filament, thereby optimizing performance. In this way, substantially lighter ropes with the same number of falls, or ropes which can hold a substantially higher load and have the same weight can be made. In addition to better performance in standard testing, the Coating finish TM gives their top ropes further advantages: They have reduced rope drag, absorb less dirt and moisture, are especially easy to handle and maintain their level of performance for longer. There is no doubt that the Genesis is Mammut’s signature 1/2 rope, even though there is no longer a duraflex option it will remain their best seller because it is just such a good rope.
The Newest Chapter in the Genesis rope is the DRY treatment process. Dry is Mammuts’ Gold treatment and so goes on all their highest performing ropes. Each individual strand of the core is given Coating finish and a thermal treatment before it is bound in the sheath which is then treated after braiding. This means water and dirt that penetrates the sheath won’t be absorbed or retained.
Before this style of treatment a wet untreated rope would only take 46% of the UIAA falls it would have whist dry. With the new DRY treatment, a rope that has been submersed in water for 15minutes with take 80% of the falls. A huge difference if you ask me. Dry treated ropes only absorb 1% on a test as apposed to Protect (just sheath) absorbing 36% and Classic (non treated) 46% tests done by the UIAA.
